The tunnel has a number of ventilation shafts that the railway also 
uses. When a train goes through the rail tunnel you can feel a blast of 
air coming along the canal tunnel, so this will help with ventilation.

I suspect that this is one of the contributory factors. BW had a £30K 
bill for replacement batteries last year. As time goes by the batteries 
hold their charge for less time, with several breakdowns resulting. 
Another factor must be the huge cost of staffing the present 
arrangement.

I am not particularly surprised, as BW had carried out exploratory 
trials last year and user groups have been pressing for a more flexible 
method of operation.
