But that would mean they rushing fools would waste time dropping crew and
waiting for them to open the gate (one presumes). So maybe they feel it's
better to charge into a lock and climb a ladder before... hang on - "wot's that
boat doing coming out of my lock on my side when the gate opened for ME by
magic (in the shape of a person off said boat with a windlass who is now
winding down the paddles before climbing on the boat as it leaves).
And if the impatient wot-not did open the other gate and charge in before the
boat in the lock can get out then that is damned bad manners and can be bloody
dangerous. Such people would be better off our canals - maybe driving on
motorways - where they can do less damage!

If they were in that much of a hurry perhaps they should have opened
the other gate, you slip out of one side while they go in the other!
