Dave:

You have an ambitious trip for a short break.  We made a similar 
trip, but a week, in 2003 with almost as many people.  Don't be too 
eager to cover ground, as you can exhaust yourself and crew with a 
long day.  The suggestion of through Braunston and then turn around 
when you are half-way is good.  Braunston itself is about as typical 
as you can get of the canals.  A look at my notes indicates:  Good 
meals at Blue Lias, Barley Mow. Old Plough in Braunston has great 
atmosphere, and is often full of boaters.  Moorings at Braunston in 
July will be crowded.  We have taken over a dozen trips on 
hire-boats, so if you have specific questions feel free to drop me a
