Memories of a hireboat I collected once with a less than 6'
sternrope -
on the second day I found the rest of it and no prizes for guessing
where. As that boatyard evidently doesn't even check the weedhatch on
  turnround I've never been back!

My son and a group of friends hired from Clifton at Rugby and managed to
destroy a rope somehow. He went into a chandlers and got a new one -
Clifton were so surprised that they offered him a discount and an
upgrade if he hired from then again!!

I do two things when mooring up - firstly double or triple the mooring
rope (i.e. from boat to bank, back to the boat and back to the bank
again) before pulling it tight - the purchase gives extra oomph.

Secondly, if the boat is on the mud, I retighten after a few boats have
gone past and she has dig her way closer in to the bank.
