Good point - hadn't thought of that. We actually very rarely use
springs, so long as the ropes are tight they are not often needed
unless in extreme circumstances. We do try and moor up to steel piling
where possible however, just because it is easier.

ps. By definition I use only springs on my home mooring, taking both
ropes towards the middle. These are tightened against each other and
so the boat doesn't move more than an inch or two as the fenders
squash.
