Domestic 240V compressor fridges take a huge start-up current. That's why they need a 13A fuse even though they probably only take about 150W when running. I think the surge can be higher than 13A, but fuses don't blow immediately.
I assume that converted 12V compressor fridges use a more conventional type of motor. Dave Wedd.
