Mike I use Orange with my 3G phone (N73) acting as a modem and find it excellent. On my trip from Alrewas to Rickmansworth and back I managed to get acceptable 3g connections most days. I have the standard monthly 7pm to 7am on weekdays and all weekend which costs me a £5/month and when I need to connect outside of those times I call Orange and they give me an all day connection for an extra £1. I don't have any supplementary antenna and usually got a decent signal by hanging the phone near a window. When I was on the Wendover Arm I didn't get 3g but I still got an acceptable connection by careful placement of the phone.
