Hi Folks, I've been looking at getting a faster than GPRS connection to the internet on the move. At the moment I use the Orange Pay-and-go £1 deal, and that works OK, but sometimes really crawls.
I was talking to the boaters phone company, and the bloke there mentioned two other ways to get faster internet. One is the "three" mobile broadband: http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/mobile_broadband_/detail.omp I would be using the pay-and-go option as I only need to use it now and again when I'm actually holidaying. The problem with this setup is that the only place to get a phone signal is in the window, and since it's a USB device needs to plug into the computer, so tethers you in one (usually awkward) place. I particularly like the bluetooth connection I use with my Sony Erricsson K510i, I talked to a Three staff member in the shop and seemed surprised that you could actually do this, and that it wasn't possible with Three... The other option was to put the orange SIM into a 3g phone, and continue to use the Orange system - which the boaters phone company said would work. I've met a couple of people using the Three mobile broadband, and it does seem to work OK in 3g areas. However, has anyone either got any experience of using the Orange system in 3g, or the other option, using a 3g phone with the 3 network (and sharing the internet using Bluetooth). Cheers, Mike ps. I realise that bluetooth is potentially slower than 3g speeds, but it's fast enough for me, and I can always connect to the phone using USB. -- Michael Askin http://shoestring_DOT_zapto_DOT_org/
