During WW2 the Irish government had wooden horse-drawn canal-boats built to carry turf (peat) into Dublin for use as fuel. I've recently read an account of the first trip (in November 1942) of the first of those G-boats (G for Government) to be built. Lacking engines, they couldn't use the third of your methods, but the report did stress the importance of the other two. Plus ca change .... bjg
