Your reply is a joke, isn't it Adrian? You thought you'd catch us out,
thinking you were being snotty about what was a perfectly
reasonable question?

Of course there are advantages in going different ways around these two
trans-Pennine canals, though as Adrian hilariously points out they are both
trans-Pennine canals which mean you'll be crossing the Pennines...
er...twice.

But yes, Richard. I'd agree with you. Come off the Peak Forest and go
straight over the HNC. Apart from the point you make about the Ashton,
you'll need enthusiasm and energy for the narrow canal so maybe it's better
to do it while your fresh. It's amazing - as indeed most of the South
Pennine ring is. Going that way you leave the worst bit until last and so
you can judge how you want to cruise it, either by rushing to get it over
with, or visiting in more unusual places such as, for instance, Rochdale
itself, where there will be levels of risk.
