I've always thought that the boards - particularly the one at Bagnall Lock, 
as you enter Alrewas, was to provide advance warning so you could wind below 
the lock otherwise you would have to back half a mile when you saw the fast 
flow and gauge at Alrewas lock .  I think the position of the one below 
Wychnor lock is again just before the winding hole.

So I have not thought they added any value apart from giving advance 
interpretation of the gauges.
