OK Will - I know that stretch very very well, I used to live near
Derby and went to T&M canal society meetings in Alrewas, and have
taken boats across it many times.

Totally agree that it is fairly narrow stretch, and so if going
towards Burton, it's a good idea to try if possible to ensure no boats
coming towards you if before entering and then leaving the lock.

But I still suggest that people who normally use canals with slow
currents, should go boating on strong river flows and tidal waters as
it sharpens one's boating skills, and enhances confidence in such
waters & removes the fear factor, .
