I use my Nokia n73 phone as the modem (it comes with usb cable and software that makes connection simple and reliable and also doubles as a way to download photos and keep contacts synchronised). I have a standard contract with Orange and pay an additional £5 per month for the data connection between 7pm and 7am on weekdays and 24 hours on Sat & Sun. If I need connection during the weekday, then I call them and they give me a 24 hour connection for an additional £1. I can call them to switch off the £5/month option when I'm not cruising (which reminds me, I need to do just that) and then re-instate it again when needed. Coverage is really quite good even from inside the boat (no external antenna). Over our 10 week cruise this summer I did find myself in black spots in remote locations (we went down to Sharpness and up the Avon to Stratford) but by and large 3g was available (and usefully shows as such on the phone screen so I can easily check before mooring up). Cheers Will
