The Captain didn't make the choice at all - he wasn't on the bridge at  
the time when the iceberg was finally spotted!

It was First Office William Murdoch who gave the order to turn 'hard a  
starboard' (which actually meant a turn to port) and rang down for  
full astern.

Whilst with the benefit of hindsight it may not have been the best  
maneouvre under the circumstances, when confronted with a bl**dy great  
iceberg dead ahead it would be the obvious thing to do - hit the  
brakes and turn away as hard as possible.
