Hi Mike and Alan - and not forgetting earlier posters either,

Well, your posts are very encouraging for me and I would fully agree with
your caveats as well, they seem most sensible; I might also consider
investing in an automatically inflating life jacket. After all, I did -
eventually - did get used to that darned cycle helmet (and even promote them
now to friends, relatives and acquaintances) because personal experience of
acquired brain injuries proves that they are not a *good thing* and, more
often than not, fairly preventable!

I rather like the 'five stops' approach, if only for wintering in really
inclement weather (obviously, 'work' is no longer a problem for me) - and
one would like to hope that BW are more likely to advise/warn in the first
instance, rather than instantly prosecute, should they be offended at any
time. Presumably one is not expected (allowed?) to navigate when rivers are
swollen or frozen (if that ever happens?)

Are 'winter closures' usually common and, more specifically, long lasting
events then? I can see that routine works are usually publicised in advance
- this now being a good opportunity to say a big 'thank you', to everybody,
for *all* of the many links, blogs and personal websites that I have now
discovered (and which, by the way, I am spending *far* too many hours
enjoyably reading .. LOL).

Trevor :-)

Depends if you go from one bridge to next along that route! :-)

Actually I would say that staying within two days travel (I could
single handed from Watford to Milton Keynes in two days) is not really
continuous cruising either.

Just how far you should travel to produce a continuous and progressive
journey around the canals is up for debate... and during winter that
is obviously impossible thanks to stoppages.

Cheers,

Mike
