Actually, that was the second GIG but it was my first. It was where I met Joe for the first time which was the start of a lasting friendship which I treasured. Joe was one of the most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Just like our other dear departed friend from those early days, Jeff Dennison, his hospitality and generosity was unconditional and limitless. Joe was, above all else, a true died in the wool boatman. His boat handling skill and knowledge of the traditions of canal boating were second to none. I have many fond memories of boating with Joe but most especially our Christmas trip one year in company with Joe on Will Crooks and Jeff on Coronation. It's almost beyond belief and bearing that of the boat skippers on that trip, only one is still with us (argument to be held later as to who exactly was Badger's skipper - me or Glen!) and of the total of six people across the three boats half have passed away. Joe was also that most valued and appreciated commodity to a performer such as myself - an appreciative, enthusiastic and encouraging listener. He was never happier than when he was acting unpaid 'roadie' for Jeff and Benny at their shows as he told me it made him feel he was able to give something back for the pleasure he got from listening to the music. I know Jeff too was very fond of Joe. Whilst he was never a prolific poster to the canals list, even in the days when he was working in IT in London, Joe had indeed been around since the very beginning and he kept in touch with the old guard listers. His obvious delight in being able to make a living on the canal in North Wales and thus escape the rat race he hated (and I was with him 100% on that one being in the same situation) was a joy to behold. Circumstances meant I missed Joe and Jacky's wedding but as soon as we met I rapidly found in Jacky another friend like Joe. My thoughts are with Jacky now as I write. I too have happy memories of stopping with Joe and Jacky on Will Crooks (although I wasn't so keen on the cats!) - particularly the last time we met up in Shropshire. Sadly, whilst the news of Joe's death is devastating, it did not come as a terrible shock. In recent years, each time we met up again, the deterioration in his health was all too obvious in private although he was usually able to put on a brave face in public. On several occasions I urged him to give up the evil weed to no avail. I'll miss you Joe Bruce
