posted?!?
If you google up the local newspaper for the area and read the sensible,
balanced articles therein you'll actually discover that whilst the family
are disappointed that their *first* application was turned down they
*understand* the reasons and are taking them into account in the preparation
of their next application.
You'd also discover that the council planning committee have said that they
are, in principal, willing to grant planning permission for a dwelling for
Marine Townsend on his Grandfathers land but that the design and location
need to be amended.
The jingoism is not coming from the man himself or his family, it's coming
from sensationalist reporting by the likes of, well, Nick Ferrari on LBC for
one.
If the stringent rules preventing inappropriate rural development were
ignored in this case, it would set a precedent which would be exploited
again and again for profit by unscrupulous developers for profit.

Bru you need to actually *listen* to the programme before using phrases like
'jingoism' & 'sensationalist reporting'
Every neighbour is in favour of the grandparents suggestions, local traders
have agreed to supply free of charge all materials-- there are no objections
from anyone bar five of the ten councillors which resulted in the head
councillor making a casting vote against the proposal.
The man himself minus two legs & most of his backside wishes to have 'a
little bit of Independence' inasmuch as his house be free-standing & detached
from his grandparents property [but on their land] with the knowledge that
they're 'near to hand' should the need arise. The councillors want a 'granny
flat attachment' to the main property.
In the interests of fairness the five + 1 councillors were invited to explain
their ruling on the radio by Nick Ferrari all either declined or said there was
nothing to add.
The job of a phone-in presenter is to play 'devil's advocate'
& encourage debate. Nick Ferrari was simply initially responding to a caller
who was decrying the actions of the council. He knew nothing of the situation
until that call came in.
The same could be said of me. You state that the local newspapers have a
different slant on things. Who's right?
Churchill once said ''The first casualty of war is truth.''
It will be interesting to see how this plays out
