This was one of the first things that I had drummed into me, as an
apprentice engine and pump fitter (way back in 1960) in the Army - before I
joined the RASC fleet as a marine engineer - and its been the reason why I
have always changed my engine oils and filters before the usual service
periods, especially with diesels.

Some of the modern oils, especially the synthetic ones (ouch - expensive!),
last a lot longer because they tend to degrade less - but it is still good
advice to change the oil filters to remove all that particulate matter.
Diesels, however, tend to dilute the oil anyway so I've kept to the less
expensive mineral oils (but not reclaimed/processed oils) and more frequent
oil changes because of this.

[Its hard to go against something that has been indelibly stamped on your
soul - like your Army number .. lol ..]
