If it's any consolation Phil your e-mail address is clipped on the web-read 
version and so, as George says, is only available to anyone if they can guess 
the missing bit. There is the facility though for me to e-mail you directly 
but, again, although I can send you the e-mail I can never see your full 
address and it is possibly that facility that your friend used to contact you.
I have never knowingly had any spam from this list (or any of the Yahoo Groups) 
but I definitely have had it from uk.rec.waterways where I use a dedicated and 
unique e-mail Yahoo address. I soon started getting spam on that address but 
luckily Yahoo spam filtering is pretty good and I only get about 5 a week that 
evade the spam filtering. This is a perfectly manageable number and you can 
designate it as spam so that the Yahoo system learns the dodgy addresses.
