Actually, the intention was to build it to Berkeley, but the money ran 
out. At one time Berkeley was a small port, with boats coming up the 
Pill into the village.

For historical stuff Hugh Conway-Jones's website (gloucesterdocks.me.uk) 
is the best - it has a huge amount of information, just shows what one 
can do when one is retired!. My web site (gloucester-sharpness.org.uk) 
is oriented more at boaters, and is in dire need of updating.

There are some good books on the canal (try looking up Hugh Conway-Jones 
on Amazon).
