Ah, hit them where it hurts most - cross your fingers and send them a
letter saying something like this:

"I'm writing to let you know that I was intending to stop for
dinner/luncheon, plus a few drinks/bottles of wine, on XXXday as I had
my family and several friends on board.
"I have to say that we were all very peckish at the time because we were
running a little behind our schedule and had not stopped for our usual
morning coffee and cake; rather unfortunately for us, once we had
arrived at 'The Old Mill' we saw that your moorings are now all marked
up as 'Private' - which meant that we had to continue on until we found
another place for refreshments.
"It was a great disappointment to us, partly because we were so hungry
and partly because we had all been looking forward to enjoying a good
meal with you - the more so as several acquaintances of ours have
commended your food to us of late."

Yours sincerely ... etc.

At worst you lose the cost of a stamp, at best you get a free mooring,
and/or discount, next time you are passing and, if they think they are
losing their 'passing trade' to the pub up the cut, maybe the signs will
come down again <g>

Trevor - trying it on :)
