There are some spill weirs, in the form of concrete weirs crests in  
the banks between each po(u)nd and the one below, which can be seen  
to handle some of the excess, but I quite agree that the consequences  
of ignoring the rule can be dire.

Have just been told by the boat that preceded us down Foxton the  
other day that the boat in front of *them* had managed to drain three  
of the upper staircase locks, presumably by leaving paddles up. I  
thought the lockie looked a bit stressed when we went through.
