I agree with Steve's suggestion. Many years ago a pal of mine did exactly
the same thing, and that was before the Ribble Link existed! He was in his 
70's
too at the time, but he only had a small GRP boat. What type/size of boat
does your dad have?

I am sure there must be some last minute cancellations for the return 
journey?
Just a thought, but maybe if he cruised back towards the link he could find 
a
return slot, or use the craneage option as a last resort?
