Yes, the Mont. Frankton Locks are only open for a couple of hours each day and must be booked in advance. (It's partly to do with BW wanting to have a keeper on duty at the staircase locks, partly to do with controlling the total number of boat movements on the canal in line with current nature conservation limits) >From Waterscape: "Summer operating hours: 12pm until 2pm Monday to Sunday. Bookings must be made BEFORE 10am on the day of passage. "Only boats with a booking will be allowed passage through the locks. Please note no passages will be allowed outside the published hours. "To book a passage telephone 01606 723800 during normal office hours 7 days a week" So you need to plan to go down Frankton one day and back up the next day. I understand there are a couple of decent pubs in the West Felton area that you might like to visit in the evening, not to mention one or two former restoration sites where you could admire the volunteers' handiwork...
