There's a great circular walk, including the canal, that we picked up a 
leaflet about from the hut where you buy your ticket for the basin.

You go to Horseshoe Falls, past Llantysillio church, across the hills, 
past Vale Crucis Abbey, up to the castle (astonishing views) and then 
back down (a long straight descent) to the canal or right down to the town.
