Iain did this on our trip boat, Bluebell which has a Lister engine and he
(and everyone else around us) came to regret it :-)
All was well for a while then the engine started losing power and had to be
bled (the crew were quite used to doing that as in the early days of using
Bluebell after we restored her, we kept getting problems with water and crud
in the fuel system. The large screwdriver was fortunately still on board).
When bleeding was taking place, black oil emerged. This indicated that the
problem was caused by the addition of old engine oil to the fuel tank. The
engine started putting out lots of smoke which made it rather unpleasant for
the steerer and anyone else on the back deck. Unfortunately, while in this
state the boat was chartered to provide trips (with other boats) at a big
canal event in Edinburgh and it has to be said that we didn't endear
ourselves to folk on the other boats :-)
However, this stage passed and Bluebell is back to running smoke free again.
Iain had apparently read on one of the canal forums about putting old oil
into the diesel tank but I don't think he will do it again.:-)
