Well said Steve. I agree 100%. That's the best post I have read all year!
Most boaters today, in steel floating cottages, probably aren't aware that
there
wouldn't be any waterways to boat on today if it weren't for all the
previous generation
of pleasure boaters, who campaigned and cruised to keep the waterways open.
In those days the *National* was a campaigning rally at a location where a
waterway was at
threat of closure, not a Waterways Festival where people could show off
their shiny
state of the art cottages and buy all manner of gadgets.
Pleasure boats comprised: converted lifeboats, ex army pontoons, plywood and
timber cruisers + ex working boats cut in half ( a 70 footer would be
considered
as an 8 or 12 berth boat).
Canal Planner and Nicholson's guides didn't exist - and they wouldn't have
been much use
in planning a days itinery because everything was unpredictable and more
fun.
Interestingly though, everyone helped everyone else out. Snobbery rarely
existed on the
waterways then. If you broke down or had a problem everyone considered it
their
duty (and pleasure!!) to help you out.
Happy days .............................. :-))))
