The usual advice is to stop out near Ashton under Lyne (Portland Basin?)
overnight and get a fairly early start to get to the lock flight by about 10am.
There is, or used to be, an escorted passage down the locks. From the bottom of
the flight you are on your own for a slog down the Rochdale 9 - lots of water
coming down and mind the bywash at the 6th(?) lock down which throws the boat
sideways if you're not careful.

Mooring on Potato Wharf in Castlefield Basin (next to the Y club) is preferred
as there are CCTV, security lights and wardens around. After this day's work,
don't worry about sleeping!

If you like foreign food, Oxford Road is only a short step away, with Chinatown
at the south end which includes the Yang Sing (possibly the largest Chinese
restaurant in England) and round the corner the Little Yang Sing is nice too.

It should be the only day of 'pressure' but even then it's not too bad, so
enjoy!

Subject: [canals-list] Overnight mooring in Manchester

We are cruising the Cheshire Ring in September and have been looking over the
anal system in and around Manchester - it looks as if it will take more than a
ay to get through the area and enjoy what the canal has to offer. We are
ondering if anyone has any advice on what overnight moorings are available. We
ill be doing the ring anti-clockwise.
