Sorry if I seemed to be having a go at you, Dave. I just get frustrated
when someone passes on the "usual warning" etc. which just perpetuates
the story. It is disappointing if there are new publications putting out
misleading and outdated advice!

Yes, I can well believe that you had no trouble 20 years ago. I'm sure
the problems, which certainly existed at that time, were much
exaggerated by boaters in the style of boastful fishermen.

Castlefield is without a doubt the best place to moor in Manchester, but
don't rule out mooring above the Rochdale Nine. A lot of boats do these
days.
This Google Street View gives a glimpse of the area now:

The blue boat on the right is in a spot where very few people walk past.
If you click the arrow to move to the right another boat comes into
view, moored opposite the junction. More people walk past there but
there is not usually any trouble from them.
Here's a view looking towards Ducie Street from the other direction:

Or for a really quiet spot to moor, there is always Telford Basin, in
Piccadilly Village: http://is.gd/eNQVg
