Hi Eric, Um, yeah. The bear here is that I don't really have any firm idea yet of what combinations of font, size, and style elicit the bug, nor any reasonably straightforward way of finding out (since I can't reproduce the issue here, and couldn't actually debug it in Sierra anyway if I could). All I really know so far is it happens consistently with Geneva 14 italic (which those users coincidentally chose themselves at random) on two machines running Sierra in countries on the other side of the world.
I suppose I could put together a test app that iterated over these users' installed fonts trying a hundred-odd style permutations and a gross of sizes for each looking for additional errors, but without some idea of the underlying cause I'm not sure what good that'd actually do me (since there's always more fonts, and a boatload of other localizations I don't have anyone to test this on). I have to hope that whatever the issue is it wouldn't have gotten past QA if it was really a shipping corrupt system font, or also affected plain. I have a test app out now that I'm awaiting results from which detects this error and loops thru the active style bits (starting with italic) flipping them off and retrying. It's obviously not a perfect solution even if it works, but if it does then at least we'd draw SOMETHING plausible in that scenario even if other fonts are similarly affected <<crosses fingers>>. Anyway I'll post the result for posterity if it works, and file a bug one way or the other… I don't suppose there's any consistent mathematical relationship between the widMax of plain and various derived styles under QD nowadays, is there? In the meantime (short of logging in as root, booting from another volume, or reinstalling the whole OS) is there any way to get Sierra to let the affected users replace Geneva.dfont with a known good copy for testing?
