Dear Nandalal, to my opinion, the power-supply problem is not peripheric: It is a central problem which can kill -logistically- and from point of view on operating costs- the whole project...Think about connecting -power-consuming- cameras etc..
Wireless technology is nice, but as long as power-issues are not resolved we will have to further rely on cable(s)...(Un)fortunately we do not have wireless power-transmission as yet. What do you mean by > powered centrally ? In Germany, we still pay about 1500.- Euros (starting from Euro1200 cheapest) for one tablet PC. So it is far from being cheap technology. Batteries (Akkumulators) last 3-4 hours, not more.. "My" bed-side model is a diskless client with 10,4 TouchScreen TFT, 512 MB RAM, based on VIA EPIA, consuming not more than 20 Watt/hour. You can easily build one for (far) less than 1000 bucks. If you let someone build it for you, it may cost 1200 USD.(one single item, if you order 100/500/1000 prices go down..) As I said: Most costly in the existing hospital is the cabling.. Investment in this technologies could be -to some extend- refinanced by selling digital content to patients (movies, MP3) and telecommunication services (VoIP, Internet, e-mail) etc, simply by charging them some amount per day...In Germany hospitals it is normal, that you pay for TV-rent, Phone etc..If you charge 5 Euros a day, you "earn" 1500 Euros a year (if bed is booked 300 days/year).
