Hi Surya, It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong, but it sounds like there is a problem with either Caret or your png images.
I'm at home with a sick child today, and John Harwell won't be in until this afternoon, so it might be tomorrow before we can look at the problem. Which platform are you using? Please upload one or more of your .png images to this site: http://pulvinar.wustl.edu/cgi-bin/upload.cgi Meanwhile, something you might try is converting your png images to jpeg and see if you have better luck with that format. The ImageMagick convert utility is available on various platforms and is handy for this purpose. You say these are slices: If they are slices that concatenated together would comprise a MRI volume, then you probably could script conversion to raw using ImageMagick's convert, and then concatenate the raw images together using the unix cat command.
