Hi Donna,
Thank you so very much for your reply. I will try your suggestions ASAP and get 
back to you. Yes I have downloaded some random png images from the web and used 
them and caret has no problem opening them. Only our images have a problem that 
is why I posted here thinking I might be missing something.

Right now I have caret installed on a Debian Linux platform. 

I will upload one of those brain slice images...yes and one of our goals is to 
get all the slices to form a volume and use that volume in caret.
