I wouldn't consider Felix's joke to be an insult at all. In my experience, "supported" in the enterprise world means "I can blame someone if things don't work perfectly." It equates to "CYA" (look it up in Google). ;-)
In the open source world, the users of software usually can't "blame" anyone... because there's no contract. Personally, I don't consider this a fault of open source, since the concept of BLAME isn't very practical. Getting RESULTS is what really matters, but that's not really what enterprises mean when the use the term "supported platform." I've found that I often get much better practical support (i.e. resolution to issues) from open source communities than I get from contracted software providers... but I don't have the "right" to point a finger in blame if I don't get a resolution quickly. Still, as Marvin mentioned, if you need a contract so that you have the "right" to expect a third-party to fix something for you, there are partners available in the CAS community. -Nathan -----Original Message----- From: Marvin Addison [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 9:45 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [cas-user] JpaTicketRealm on Oracle 11g R2 > has anyone tried out JpaTicketRealm on Oracle 11G R2 JpaTicketRealm is an Oracle-specific facility that is not supported by CAS in any way out of the box, but it's possible you could develop an integration layer if needed. > My database admins > asked me if this combination is supported, whatever supported means with a > product that is open source and given away for free :) You're likely joking, but it's nonetheless an insult to the CAS project. Perhaps our supported platforms are poorly documented, but they are supported nonetheless. As far as JPA support, we support any database platform for which there is a Hibernate JPA dialect, http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/stable/core/api/org/hibernate/dialect/package-summary.html. If you want to go a step further, commercial support contracts are available from a number of commercial partners, for example, http://www.unicon.net/services/cas/support.
