When I opened the mdl, some connections from the output of a superslice to a xilinx blue block inside a subsystem were not connected. I connected them by hand, and all was well. It happened three times in a row when I opened the mdl file. It's building OK (got past where it failed before, at least) since I connected the wires by hand.
