Hi Rick,

Some two years ago I tried to find a CX-4 to fiber converter, there were none that were standard 10G Ethernet and could be connected directly to 10G Ethernet switch fiber ports.

There were several Infiniband ones that can be used with 10G Ethernet too if both ends have converters.

Tried to convince the Roach designers to include a 10G fiber transceiver footprint on the board, no success. At least three of the 10G fiber standards use exactly the same signalling as the CX4 that will be included anyway. Sigh, would have needed only some solder pads, down side of board that is not used anyway would have sufficed.

Dan's comment that all the boards do not provide power is very relevant, even the first iBob boards did not.

Cheers,
Jouko

Hey Dan & all,
I asked the Myricom guy about the power on the NIC card; his reply is attached. They don't provide active ports, and think it's a bad idea. He says buy the SFP+ NIC, which can also be used with "Direct Attach" copper cables, for short runs (but I don't know what that means, really). Since we are about to buy NIC and Zarlink cable, I'm now concerned they won't work together. Any thoughts?

hi shilpa,

if you look on your NIC card, you can see if it's got
the op-amp and associated circuitry to detect a
cable that needs power and then send power to it.
it should be right next to the CX4 connector.

or you could call or email myricom and ask them
if their cards supply DC power through the connector.

best wishes,

hi shilpa,

the early CX4 10Gbe spec didn't supply optional power
through the connector, and the first revision bee2's and
ibob's we built didn't have powered connectors.

but the spec changed several years ago, so i would have
guessed that any modern NIC board would have powered
connectors. do you have a really old NIC?

No, these are pcie Myricom NIC's, some of them just purchased in September.

Shilpa told me the optical converters don't work with the Fujitsu xg-700
either. Just with the Bee2. Odd.

Hi All,

I'm trying to use a optical transceiver to adapt CX4 to optical fiber:
Fujitsu FPD-010R008-0E + FOC-CCxxxx. I'm using it for a short distance
of
10m. I did the loop back test on BEE2 and it works fine. So I'm sure
that the cable and the module is working fine. But when I have one end
of
the cable connected to the 10Gbe NIC card on the system I don't see the
module getting any power from the NIC card. Does anyone know any
specific
10Gbe NIC card that would work with these modules?

Any suggestions?

Thanks
