Yeah, I'm afraid you'll need a PPC JTAG programmer :(
We use the "USB Wiggler" from Macraigor Systems (because it's cheap,
not because it's any good). You have the correct macro -- http://casper.berkeley.edu/svn/trunk/roach/production/test_software/roach_testing/macraigor_macros/loadram_rinit_auto.mac
The Macgraigor software tool is a little flaky and sometimes you
have to hit "reset" a few times first to get things going.
This will load a serial bootloader on the PPC and you then need to
transfer the image across the serial port as before. Note that this
protocol is XMODEM (not YMODEM which is used when you "run newuboot"
in uboot). The latest uboot is http://casper.berkeley.edu/svn/trunk/roach/sw/binaries/uboot/uboot-2010-05-11-t111010-corsairsilent
which fixes support for some memory modules. In any event, you
should try'n figure out why the initial serial transfer didn't work
otherwise you're going to keep having problems. Possibly you're using
minicom and forgot to install lrzsz?

Okay, I've found the following
http://casper.berkeley.edu/wiki/ROACH_Bringup#PowerPC_U-Boot_Configuration
but that seems to be a bit superseded by the following (e.g., use
loadram_rinit_auto.mac instead of program.mac)

Ugh. Dead roach.
I ran "run newuboot" and started sending the file, but HyperTerminal
failed with a "Did not receive response". I tried sending the file
a second time and got the same response. Without other alternatives
I then powered off the roach. Now I get nothing on the serial line
when powering up.
I ran "run newkernel" yesterday w/o problem.
Do I have to do some prom programming now??
