Hi Gene.

I'm no expert but I think there are lots of reports of
PPC network problems at 1000 Mbps so that for reliable
connections we are recommended to use 100 Mbps links.
see for example:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02881.html

For the 25 or so Roach1s I work with we restrict all to
100 Mbps. If the network switch supports 10/100/1000 Mbps we
configure the switch ports with Roach1s to use just 100 Mbps.

I think the instructions as sent with the Roach1s there
are instructions to restrict PPC network ports to 100 Mbps
max.

Subject: [casper] ROACH 1 Ethernet Problems

Hey Guys,
I've recently started using and setting up the ROACH boards for my professor.
We have 5
boards, 3 of which work fine, and two with problems connecting over Ethernet.
On one
board, every couple of seconds I get alternating messages:

eth0: link is up, 1000 FDX, pause enabled
eth0: link is down

Also the leds D6 and D7 alternate between on and off when with the messages so
they are
on after the eth0: link is up, 1000 FDX, pause enabled message and off on the
other
message.

On the other board, the network never gets a an ip address from the router's
dhcp and
just shows the following every time:

Listening on LPF/eth0/02:00:00:04:03:05
Sending on   LPF/eth0/02:00:00:04:03:05
Sending on   Socket/fallback
DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 16
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 17
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 9
No DHCPOFFERS received.

Then the message emac0: RX disable timeout appears.

I do not believe it to be a linux problem as I get the same results even if use
a SD
card from a good ROACH and put it in one of these two machines I get the same
results.
I have tried changing between static and dhcp network configurations in the
/etc/network/interfaces file. Any help would be welcomed and appreciated.
