Hi Andrew, Hope all is well at SARAO.
Just my 2c... I don't particularly like the 4x2 for heavy work (it has undersized thermal management and PSUs) but last I checked the board is pretty great value even at non-academic prices. For DSA (and other projects) I've had good luck with System-on-Modules (I've used both Knowledge Resources and iWave and had good experiences). The vendors all have COTS SoM + Carrier solutions you could use, though pricing is substantially worse than the 4x2 (and particularly painful right now because [supposedly] RAM). In my various projects it looks like the 65/67DR chips are being sold cheaper than the 47/48DR alternatives, so at first glance I'd look at what options there are targeting those. I know other CASPERites have been looking at boards from Interwiser, so perhaps they will follow up with more info. Good luck - interested to see what you come up with!
