All,
I finally have given the meter a good try out and believe that the
Chinese must have copied the higher end meter, since the one I have
seems to work swell.
Some readings, for expectations.
Piano bench 6% moisture
Oak diniing room table: 6%
Kitchen cutting board: 12%
My hand: 40+ % (the literature suggests that this is near the top of the
meteer's range.)
Now the interesting ones:
Companionway boards: 12% (teak, and rained on yeasterday)
Sliding salon top: 6%
Cockpit floor: 6%
Six inches aft of the stem fitting: 7% ( I had rebedded the stem fitting
1 1/2 years ago)
1 1/2 foot aft of the stem fitting 16%
5" port and starboard of the mast step: 17%
These last two are right in line with the figures give me by my
surveyor, and I believe indicate a need for remedial action.
In all, and politics aside, I feel I can recommend the $150 meter. and
Harbor freight has a responsive return policy.
Operation is baby simple; battery is the common 9 volt battery, as used
in most smoke alarms.
Google Harbor Freight; search: moisture meter.
I'd be glad to set the meter to any boat reasonably near to Columbia or

I noticed the description indicates that it has four scales for
various types of wood. Do you have any feel for what it's accuracy
might be for fiberglass, or for balsa sandwiched in fiberglass?
