A much
better alternative to carpet is deco dot marine flooring. No concerns
slipping with wet shoes, cleans up in a snap with a 12v car vacuum and it
absolutely bullet proof. Also eliminates that problem of the indoor carpet
shedding all over the place. If you have removed your carpet will know
what I mean. We removed the snaps to give it a smooth appearance all
around. Also helps with any water that might get below to run quickly to
the bilge. Keeps things drier below ... no wet carpet to contribute to
mold etc. Check out at http://www.garysupholstery.com/decodot.html
Some searching on the Internet might come up with a
better price.

-----Original Message-----Instead of snaps, you might consider using velcro tabs. They are much more forgiving. That's what the PO had done on my boat. The carpet was pretty dirty and worn, though, and I was going to replace it by doing pretty much what you're contemplating (buy a remnant and cut it to fit). But my wife suggested putting down an oriental runner with a skid-proof rubber backing instead. I thought that sounded too Martha Stewart-ish for my tastes. To humor her, I tried it, and it looks great. ("Not bad" is what I think I said at the time.) Plus, it's easy to toss out of the way when I need to get to the bilge or do dirty maintenance work below decks.

I'm replacing the original carpet in my 82 Catalina 27. I brought the old carpet home for the winter, thinking I would take it to a regular carpet shop and ask them to cut a piece and install the snaps, using the old carpet as a template.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I had previously checked with CatalinaOwners.Com, and they don't carry carpet.
Has anyone done this? Are there special specs for boat carpet? Is it likely the snaps will be in the right place when I go to install it? Would I be better off to buy the carpet as a rectangle, lay it on the floor, then cut it and install the snaps in place? Any ideas would be appreciated.
