No doubt PFD’s might have helped in the Eygptian ferry disaster – though most people were asleep when the boat went over - but PFD’s are only a bandaide on what is inherently a very unstable vessel design – there are lots of issues with that particular ferry design – in fact there was another one that capsized in the far east I think it was not long before the one in Egypt. In fact that design has one of the worst overall safety records.   MA has a mandatory PFD requirement for children – but judging by the number of kids I see in boats during the summer months without them – I suspect it has as much enforceability as the seatbelt law does.     

 

Frankly, you can’t legislate common sense and personal responsibility and from what I’ve seen it’s seriously on the wane in this country.  Just look at the latest study of college kids that identified that 60% of them were functionally illiterate when it came to common tasks – but I bet they all passed the MCAS or Regents or whatever legislated test of supposed competence the more money than brains group of legislator’s dreamed up -

Does Maryland have any mandatory PFD laws now?

 

We have one related to children, which has spawned PFD sharing programs at various family beach outing hot spots. I’m sure it’s saved more than a few. It includes children on the dock.

 

I think in the wake of the Egyptian ferry disaster you may do better in focusing the language of the law rather than mount opposition. Maybe expand jet ski PFD requirements to power boats 22 feet and under. And pick it up vessels traveling at more than 12 knots or with more than 12 aboard.

 

That would let lawmakers be responsible and leave open ground for responsible small boat skippers.

Fellow Marylanders -

 

There is a bill going through the legislature right now REQUIRING everyone on a boat in Maryland waterways to wear a PFD.  The bill is being championed by some Baltimore City delegates in reaction to the water taxi accident last year, but I have heard that the way bill is currently written, commercial vehicles are exempted.

 

There is an article in the Capital today saying that the bill is going to be reworked to include charter boats (fishing boats and water taxis etc.), but I don't think we should just sit by and wait to see IF they change the law.  The article does not address anything other than charter boats.

 


 

I urge those of you who value your choice to wear a PFD or not wear one to contact your representatives and tell them what you think about having your freedom to choose revoked. I hope someone steps in and tells me that I have my facts wrong, but I have heard this from several sources, most recently at AYC on Saturday.
