Thanks for the advise. One other question. When you cut flax with a razor, because it's waxed, etc. you get a clean cut. Gortex seems to be fabric. Can you get a clean cut with it?

After reading others' opinions that it should not be adjusted to be 100% drip free, I adjusted it at the dock to drip minimally under power (straining against the dock lines). I think I adjusted it twice more in the first hours of actual use, and I've adjusted it once since then (in 3 years of use). The Gore packing is used extensively in industrial pump applications which are much more demanding than the packing of my stuffing box.

Note that more than once, reference is made to adjusting it to be "virtually dripless". That in my opinion is the equivalent of "almost dripless".

- I haven't used that, but I use the Gore packing and I have had great results.
- I would be skeptical of any packing that touts itself as completely dripless. However, with the Gore, I have it adjusted for zero drip when not under power, and about a drip per minute under power. If you have it tightened to be drip free, check the shaft temperature after some motoring and make sure you are not burning up the packing.
