on the bow, we always blame forestay wraps on the helm.

I know we have done it on some of the boats I race on, but in those
conditions you don't have much time to check out the speedo.
I think the highest speedo read I have seen was around 8.6 and that
was in 30 ish and just before we tried to douse the chute and
subsequently put such a wrap around the forestay that we couldn't get
the damn thing down and it acted like an anchor as the other boats in
the class sailed right by with just a jib up.
BUT we were kicking their ass for a while. And it was on a Wednesday
night in Annapolis. Took us almost an hour in the pouring rain to get
the sail off the forestay after the finish without tearing it to
pieces. Skipper went up the mast and down the forestay to free the
thing. All in all it SUCKED.
