The folding prop on salty Penobscot Bay in Maine is a practical
necessity on a standard C-27 to avoid snagging lobster pots. Under sail
you usually slide over the pot warp. I say "usually" only because I
know that one can snag pot warp healed and catching on the rudder. I've
yet to snag in the four years with my folding prop. Previously with a
two bladed prop that wasn't always lined up I snagged four or five times
a year. There has been no problem with barnacles or marine growth.
There has been no noticable decrease in boat speed/rpm.

I sail in northern Chesapeake Bay and props, etc. get fouled with
barnacles, etc. Not sure you have the same problem sailing on an
inland lake. What are the experiences of others who have folding
props and sail in salty water?
