It's appaling that this attitude would go to the extent of manufacturing a tiller pilot that isn't waterproof.  Don't they know that it is most valuable when it's raining and we want to be under cover, sipping hot rum drinks, while the boat sails itself?

I'm constantly amazed that so many think that sailing is strictly a fair weather sport. It's like they respond with, "Couldn't you get back to the marina in time?" Even on some of our short summer cruises, we go out in rain or other events. Sometime we do get caught by a thunderstorm; but, it all evens out in the end.

I replaced my old Navico with the ST 2000. It is fast, powerful and
very, very quiet. The downside is that it is not waterproof. If you
sail in foul weather like I do, you'll have to take extra
precautions. I had to bring it in for repairs (under warranty) as it
got wet inside. When I discussed it with the tech he seemed
bewildered that anyone would sail in anything but perfect conditions.
