anything would probably work ok, but it will have to hold up to being doused and slammed and stuff...and then doused again and heated up and cooled and slammed some more.
as far as personnel, best to dedicate someone to calling the headings. "Down 3," "down 5," etc. every 10-15 seconds more often in a sudden knock or lift. that way the helm and/or tactician always knows where they are in terms of what the initial heading was. It's easier for someone to hear "DOWN 8" than have to remember the initial heading and then have to do the math while trying to concentrate on driving and traffic.
