One thing I do to help in backing out of the slip is to keep the starboard stern line in hand (literally) while reversing. This keeps the boat from swinging into the port piling. Once I have momentum I throw the line to the starboard piling. Also, the prop walk isn't nearly as severe; however, I still usually shift to neutral so that I can swing the bow to port quicker.
