Tom,
Congratulations on the purchase, I hope you enjoy your C27 out on Lake Michigan as much as we have enjoyed ours. Not sure about an '86, but normal weak spots for leaks, especially on older boats tend to be the chainplates and the old style windows with the aluminum frames if you have those. The older ones also did not use real thruhulls, just glassed in pipe fittings, that was a problem on my '79. As far as sails, I had good luck with the Quantum loft in Delafield, they raced with me before and after I bought to make recommendations and ensure the finished product was performing. They might be the best source for advice on cloth and battens. Another C27 in our marina bought a main from the Racine Quantum loft with good results as well, they would be even closer to you. If you are looking for the absolute lowest price, you will probably have to look mail order, but I found the local guys were just a bit more and the advice was worth it to me. Over all very good condition, new head sail, low hours on the Universal, and very clean. I am perplexed by how 3 fingers of water gets into the bilge within 24 hours. My stuffing box is barely dripping and thru hulls are closed... Any thoughts? Also, If were to purchase a new main sail, what is the recommendation for cloth weight, batons and price and where to purchase?
