I may be alone in this sentiment but I hate the look of old neglected wood.
I sanded my thirty year old wood enough to get the worst of the offending
stuff off and used satin spar varnish.  I think it looks great now but time
will tell how long it lasts.  I see finish pealing off other boats so I
don't know if that will happen to me in a year or so or not.  I have noticed
that the sailing magazines never mention spar varnish and since I'm a hard
headed fella that makes me want to use it all the more.
